Code Haven is an organization founded by 16 Yale University engineering undergraduates in 2016. They provide coding workshops for middle school students in New Haven, Connecticut. The organization conducts online lessons, group activities, and class wide demonstrations. By 2017, the organization has grown to 25 members and serves nearly 100 students throughout New Haven’s school district.
On April 27th, 2018, Makeblock was cordially invited to attend and sponsor Code Haven’s first annual project fair. The project fair was held at Bishop Woods Magnet school and it consist of 200+ students, teachers, and parents. During the project fair, the students were able to showcase self-made apps that were created with the guidance of Code Haven’s mentors. In conjunction of the presentations, Makeblock held an open format workshop. The students were able to code and program Makeblock products such as the mBot, Ranger, and Codey Rocky. With the mentorship from Code Haven’s workshops, the students were able to operate Makeblock products with minimal training or supervision.
After the presentations and workshops, Code Haven hosted a raffle that consist of STEAM education kits that were sponsored by various ed-tech companies. In order to participate in the raffle, the students must visit each booth and receive a sticker. Once they received stickers from every booth, they are rewarded a certificate of completion as well as a entree ticket for the raffle. Makeblock was honored to have sponsored a class set of mBots to the Code Haven’s project faire.
Code Haven’s goals were to mentor and introduce younger students the world of coding, in which, has achieved with great success. They are hoping to expand its organization and serve more students throughout New Haven’s school district. As STEAM is being implemented in school curriculum, organizations such as Code Haven with the partnership of Makeblock is a great way to bridge the gap of creativity and critical thinking. Makeblock is beyond ecstatic that we were are able to witness the growing prevalence of STEAM in the US education system.
